Though similar in appearance to the Missouri Defence Bonds, these are different in obligation and had green backs. The notes were printed in $20-$20-$20-$20 sheets at Keatinge & Ball, Columbia, S.C., on both watermarked and unwatermarked paper. There is no specific enactment on the face, but the notes are clearly intended for military use as the payees were members of the 'Missouri State Guard\" and were to be paid \"in Missouri Defence Bonds.\" There is space for the governor to sign and an endorsement line for the payee at the bottom. The green backs specify the backing from state revenues and their use for taxes and state obligations. Seated Liberty with factories is at upper left, a small steamboat is at top center within the titles, and the right end shows a \"20\" die above the Missouri State Arms . A wide, red script TWENTY protector is across the bottom. The ornate green back shows the obligation in an oval cartouche flanked by \"20\" dies. Printed on unwatermarked paper. Plate C.
