There was a consecration in 1066, and Matilda was buried in the choir in 1083. Work continued until c. 1130, when the nave received its unusual false sexpartite vaults. The church has a crypt at the east end, an aisled nave of nine bays with a twin-tower façade block, projecting transepts with an eastern apsidal chapel on each arm and a two-bay, groin-vaulted choir separated from the flanking aisles by a solid wall. Originally there were three eastern apses in echelon, but the main apse was replaced by a two-storey hemicycle in the early 12th century. The nave has a three-storey elevation, with a narrow, false triforium and a clerestory passage. La Trinité, like St Etienne, Caen, was decorated by several different workshops of sculptors. The capitals of the nave arcade and crossing arches survive from the campaign of c. 1060–80, although they have been much restored. The sculpture of the clerestory passages of the nave and transept (c. 1130) depended on a very different style. Although restored and rearranged, the scallop capitals are decorated with beading, heads and volutes that illustrate general trends in Norman sculpture c. 1130. Their influence can be seen in a number of country churches in Normandy, particularly at Bernières-sur-Mer, Creully and Saint-Gabriel, and in England, especially at Canterbury Cathedral.
