The Gloriette (1773–5) is an open arcaded belvedere designed by Hohenberg as a pantheon and viewing point; obelisks were erected (1777) as an allusion to dynastic glory; the artificial Roman Ruin (1778) was a monument to recovery from natural disaster; and an extensive historical and mythological programme was devised for the numerous statues produced at this time by the workshop of Christian Friedrich Wilhelm Beyer. The lavish Rococo decoration of the main parterre was simplified in a Neo-classical manner by the landscape gardener Franz Boos about 1780, although the crowning feature remained Beyer's Fountain of Neptune. In the second quarter of the 19th century the Holländischer Garten was replaced by the new Botanical Garden, and in 1880–82 an imposing iron-and-glass Grosses Palmenhaus (l. 114 m) was built by Franz Xaver Segenschmied, based on English models. The cultivation of rare botanical specimens at Schönbrunn has enjoyed a worldwide reputation since the 18th century.
