Granby, MO - Major Geo. W. Clark - Lead Mines Scrip, Payable at Fort Smith, AR 50 Cents February 1, 1862 Rothert 228-2. PCGS Very Fine 30. Grandy Lead Mine Scrip notes are not very rare, but they are historically significant currency from this strategic lead-mining region. Lead, besides its many other uses, was essential for the manufacture of ammunition, and the Confederacy wanted to maintain control of the lead mines in Granby and elsewhere. The Union wanted to seize the Granby mine for the same purpose. The lead mining \"rush\" at Granby, in Newton County, began in the 1850s. In less than ten years there were 8,000 residents and the mines produced over 25,000,000 tons of lead. It was the largest source in Missouri and one the largest in the nation. When this note was printed, Granby was still under Confederate control and the note was payable to Major George W. Clark at Fort Smith, Arkansas (therefore, it also has a Rothert listing). Clark organized supplies for General McCulloch from Fort Smith. The Union took control of Granby in October 1862, but the smelter was destroyed shortly after during the Battle of Granby. During that battle, Stand Waitie commanded Native American soldiers for the Confederacy. This note was printed on the back of violet exchange forms (some vignettes show) without imprint. A farmer is at the left end with Clark's titles and payable above. At the right, arced LEAD MINES SCRIP is above a steamboat vignette. A red FIFTY CENTS protector is across with \"Redeemable in Confederate Notes\" below. The city and date are to the left of the signature line. Although a signature of Clark is present, it might not be in his hand or from the period. Well margined and bright. An important artifact from the strategic and historic Missouri lead mining region.
