The interior surfaces of the dome were covered with mosaics, and its overall diameter is 14 meters, making it the third largest building on the Haram. It is generally accepted that it was built by order of Abd al-Malik. At some point in the history of the entire complex, interest in eschatology became pervasive and the Dome of the Chain became the place of Judgement, with themes associated with a chain that would stop the wicked and let the just pass through.
