As you can see from the slide, the four digit logo date punch was inadvertantly inverted or turned upside down on the initial punch into this die. The bottom of the upside down last 8 is visible midway between the 1 and 8; the bottom of the 5 can be seen between the 8 and 5; the bottom of the other 8 between the 5 and 8 and the base of the 1 protruding out from the center of the last 8 on the right. This variety is quite scarce in high grades (EF-AU) and rare in Mint state. There is also a repunched date variety (not inverted) for this year which is rarer still.
