In a Greek–Arab document of 1143, preserved in the archives of the Cappella Palatina, Admiral George of Antioch declares that he has erected the church of S Maria and spared no effort or expense in its decoration. In 1146 some nearby houses were sold to the Greek clergy of the church, and on this site were built the portico, the atrium and, in front of it, the campanile, which was completed by 1185. In 1139 a convent of Benedictine nuns was founded in the nearby houses of the Martorana, where a small monastic centre may already have existed. In 1434 the church of S Maria was donated to the convent, which afterwards assumed its name. Despite later alterations the church's original plan of a Greek cross within a square and terminating in three eastern apses can still be detected. Barrel vaults and low groin vaults cover the arms and four corner bays respectively, while an octagonal drum and dome on four columns rise above the crossing. Both the plan and the mixed system of vaulting are typical of the Middle Byzantine architectural style. The ornamental details of the exterior cornices in concentric frames and the minute intarsia work in the precisely carved sandstone wall facings are derived from Islamic art.
