In 1662 the Queen commissioned Nicodemus Tessin I to build a new palace which was substantially finished by the time of the architect's death in 1681 and was completed by his son Nicodemus Tessin II. Although the palace's classicizing facade is closely related to Dutch Palladianism, the building's plan fuses older Swedish building traditions and contemporary French ideas. The latter are reflected, for instance, in the centrally positioned galleries of both the large main apartments. Many of Tessin's Baroque interiors are well preserved, in particular the monumental, central staircase, with its rich illusionistic wall paintings (1690s).
