Light even wear is seen on an example that is sharply detailed for this issue. The surfaces are lustrous with pleasing gold toning. This first date of the Spade-style guinea (named for the design of the reverse shield, which resembles a spade, or shovel head) is actually a one-year variety, as the engraving was deeper in the dies and produced images in slightly higher relief than was subsequently seen from 1788-1799.
