In 1056 or 1066 the Abbot of St Ouen, Nicolas, son of Richard II, Duke of Normandy (reg 996–1027), began building a new church, which was dedicated on 17 October 1126. The transepts and nave of this timber-roofed basilica were equal in size to the nave and transepts of the present Gothic church, which is 134 m long. In spite of fires in 1136 and 1248 a new church was not begun until 1318, and the present choir represents one of the last great Rayonnant undertakings.
