After his marriage to Anne of Brittany in 1491 the old château proved inadequate for the court and plans for a new palace were ready by 1493. Raimond de Dezest was in charge of the works and Colin Biart was the master mason. The chronicler Philippe de Commines called Amboise 'the largest edifice begun by a king in over a hundred years'. Charles was so keen to complete the structure that work on it was maintained day and night throughout the year, with large fires to provide heat and light during winter. The most impressive survival of Charles's work at Amboise is the chapel of St Hubert, originally part of the Queen's apartments and a fine example of Flamboyant Gothic architecture, with windows containing elaborate, flowing tracery. The lintel above the doorway, showing two scenes from the Lives of SS Hubert and Christopher, is the most impressive sculpture to survive and is probably the work of Netherlandish sculptors, including Casin d'Utrecht. Charles was also concerned with the decoration of the interiors. The principal painter responsible for the main rooms, Antoine Bryant, was surprisingly paid at a higher rate than the master mason. Tapestries were an even greater expense. As early as 1487 Charles purchased a series of eight south Netherlandish verdure tapestries and at Moulins around December 1490 he acquired a Destruction of Jerusalem in six pieces and a History of Hercules in seven pieces. The large tapestry known as the Glorification of Charles VIII (New York, Cloisters) includes an inscription that has been interpreted as the signature of the Brussels designer Jan van Roome. Not all of Charles's tapestries, however, were new: the Trojan War tapestries hung at Amboise in 1492–3, probably designed in France during the 1460s, were re-emblazoned with Charles's device of the sun for the reception of the Queen soon after their marriage.
