Colonial American Fiscal Paper -State of the Massachusetts Bay - (Act of May 2, 1777) 6% Treasury Loan Certificate due March 1, 1781 Anderson-Smythe MA-10 Certificate. A similar \"Sword in Hand\" bond engraved by Hurd, but with differences in the obligation. An interesting bond, and the serial number 1 example of the obligation and payable type. Printed from a Nathaniel Hurd plate on laid paper. 22.0 cm by 22.5 cm. At upper left, a rattlesnake frames a standing patriot holding a sword and with mottos as previous. Intricate floral bordering is on three sides, and the top has a double-line frame. The left end is indented, as issued. Mixed font obligations are across with spaces for the date, serial number, denomination, issuee, and signatures. \"Treasurer\" is engraved. An embossed stamp is on the text portion. Issued for 30 Pounds, Dec. 1, 1777. Signed by committee members and Henry Gardner (pen cancelled). A broad-size bond. With some stains and numerous splits in the wide right-end margin. Very Good or so. Not a rare type, with at least 6,200 issued (per Anderson), but the serial number priority is intriguing. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society\n\n
