There are three contiguous, porch-like Nile shrines with nearly identical decoration (Sethos I, Ramesses II and Merneptah) and a large stele (Ramesses III) mark a place of offerings twice a year to the Nile god. North of them is a long line of 32 small funerary shrines, cut in the cliff above the river by high officials of the 18th Dynasty, mostly under Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis III. Another series of shrines, different in form and function and further away from the river, was built high up on the east bank in honor of Amenophis III. Here, in one of the quarries, three monumental ram-headed sphinxes, damaged or unfinished, have been left unshipped.
