Shoal Creek, MO - J. A. Bare $3 Oct. 1, 1862. PCGS Very Fine 30PPQ. This is another wonder note from the Newman Collection, surviving through the Civil War to our modern era in a remarkable state of preservation. The simple, rustic appearance evokes the tumultuous period of Missouri's southwestern military theatre. Its distinctive blue paper adds to the eye appeal. Shoal Creek runs through the northwest corner of Newton County (where the Confederate capital of Neosho was located) and was adjacent to the Indian Territories. Military engagements and skirmishes to control mining, particularly lead, and other resources in the county were important events in the Civil War. The Battle of Shoal Creek took place in December 1861. Native Americans fought on both sides with Colonel (later General) Stand Watie commanding the Confederate 2nd Cherokee Mounted Rifles regiment. This note is printed on blue rag paper without imprint and has fancy end borders with simple lines at top and bottom. Town and date are at upper right, with \"$3\" counters in the top corners. Bolded THREE DOLLARS is across the center with the obligation, \"Payable in Confederate Notes, or Mo. Bonds, when / 10, 20, or $50 are presented.\" The issuer name, J. A. BARE, is printed at lower right, and the serial number space is at lower left. Countersigned on the blank back by J. A. Bare. In amazing condition with light folds seen from the back; from the face, the note looks brand new.
