Its site on the south slope of the Acropolis may not have been the original one. It appears that wooden seating, possibly in the Athenian Agora, collapsed in the early 5th century BCE, and there is archaeological evidence that the theatron of the Theatre of Dionysos was shored up at that time. It was therefore probably moved to its present location at the beginning of the 5th century bc, since a curved retaining wall of that date may have been part of it. If so, it was not, as originally thought, strictly circular, since the remains of the wall do not form a regular segment of a circle.
