Her father, Mirza Ghiyath Beg, was an Iranian courtier and able administrator who served as Jahangir's minister, and he was given the title I‛timad al-Daula ('Pillar of the State'). Buried with him are his wife, Asmat Begum, and other family members. The tomb occupies the middle of a walled garden laid out on a chār-bāgh ('four-plot') plan. Raised stone pathways with shallow water channels in the middle connect the tomb with the entrance gateway on the east and ornamental false gateways on the north, south and west. All of the gateways are constructed of red sandstone; that on the west is an elegant and beautifully decorated two-storey structure overlooking the river. The garden setting is enhanced by such water effects as cascades, lotus ponds and fountains (including ponds and fountains set in the plinth of the tomb). Relatively small in scale, the tomb is admired most for the delicacy of its decoration. Intricate inlay work in shades of yellow, brown, grey and black contrasts with the smooth whiteness of the marble from which the tomb is constructed. Stones include yellow porphyry, agate, jasper and black marble. Geometrical designs and arabesques are combined with motifs featuring wine cups, vases with flowers and cypress trees. Square in plan (measuring 21 m on each side), the tomb has engaged octagonal towers at the corners. These become circular above the roof line and are crowned by domed chatrīs (open pavilions). The second storey consists of a square pavilion set in the middle of a roof terrace, which is lined by low screenwork balustrades. The pavilion has an elongated, canopy-like roof culminating in a lotus petal motif topped by two pinnacles. The line of a broad chajjā (stone projection), casting a deep shadow, is paralleled on the lower level and towers by a cornice supported by brackets. Each façade of the lower and upper level is composed of three arches, the centre arch sometimes serving as an entrance, while the others are closed by delicately carved marble screens (Ind.-Pers. jālī). The soffits of the lower-level arches are incised with intricate lace-like arabesques. The interior of the lower level consists of a central, square tomb chamber with cenotaphs of I‛timad al-Daula and Asmat Begum. (The graves are in a chamber below.) Four oblong rooms on the sides and four square chambers at the corners are all interconnected. The whole is embellished with stucco and painted decoration in designs shared with fine embroidery, carpets and wall hangings. Birds and animals appear in some compositions. The interior of the upper pavilion is decorated with inlay work and has a fine patterned floor. It contains two more cenotaphs.
