This 5 cents sutler cardboard and the following three denominations are among the more interesting sutler currency pieces ever offered. They have been part of the Newman collection for decades, and they were published and plated in the Matt Rothert Arkansas reference in the sutler section. We believe they are unique. The 2nd Arkansas was one of four African-American regiments formed after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 near Helena, Arkansas. After being combined and reformed into the 54th  U.S. Colored Regiment, they were sent west into the Indian Territory to fight against the Confederates, including Stand Watie, and into further action in the Trans-Mississippi. Printed on yellow cardboard, in black HEAD QUARTERS 2nd ARKANSAS. The latter is crossed out and \"54 US\" is written in. At center, \"Good for 5 Cents/IN MERCHANDISE\"; signed at the bottom by McDowell as the sutler. This is the Rothert plate note, and it is outstanding.
