Tahlequah, Indian Territory (OK) - The Cherokee Nation - Treasury Note $2 June 11, 1862 Cr. CHR N-3, Burgett-7, Durand IT-96. PCGS Very Fine 20. An extremely rare Civil War-period note from this historic bi-lingual Indian Nation issue. Notes from the May 2, 1862, Act evolved from the Cherokee treaty with Brigadier Confederate General Albert Pike, against the advice of Principal Chief John Ross. A major portion of this treaty addressed the settlement of the 1846 claims due from Washington in the form of specie ($77,644.36, per Douglas B. Ball's research) and a trove of $172,300 in Confederate treasury notes. This series, which appears to be locally printed, is in denominations from 50 cents to $5. The notes were signed by two Ross family members: Lewis Ross, brother of Chief John Ross and uncle of Clerk Joshua Ross, who was a wealthy slaveholder. The notes did not circulate long and most were seized and destroyed in July 1862. Like other denominations in the series, a uniface note printed on very thin, partly translucent rag paper. Without imprint, but now attributed to John Candy. A spiraling ornamental pattern, different from those on other denominations, forms the top and bottom frame lines. End panels at left and right, composed of interesting oval ornaments, enclose the denomination TWO DOLLARS, in English at the left, and translated into the Sequoyah alphabet at the right. The numeric denomination in bold is seen at upper left. The obligation, bolded TWO DOLLARS, and its translation in dialect are across. The additional obligation at top, \"Issued by authority of Law in lieu of Notes of the Confederate States,\" is continued along the bottom margin, \"which are retained in the Treasury for the redemption hereof.\" Signed by Joshua Ross as clerk and Lewis Ross as treasurer. The Shull-Criswell Rarity is 11 (2-4 known). An impressive example with bold signatures. This is the third and final denomination (of four issued) from the Newman Collection. The others were cataloged and sold at Newman Part VII in October 2007. The $1 note, graded PCGS Very Fine 25, realized $12,925, and the $5 note, graded PCGS Extremely Fine 40, realized $9,987.50. This denomination was not in the Ford collection (Ford Part XX) or in the 1987 Ball-Richmond Auction conducted by the NASCA-division of R.M. Smythe & Co. This is a key Civil War era rarity.
