There is only one triple signed, fully issued and uncancelled War of 1812 Treasury Note, the $3 note of this act sold at Ford Part VI in October 2004. However, these are very collectible and quite affordable considering their history and scarcity. Like the other notes from the series, engraved and printed by Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. on watermarked UNITED STATES bond paper with color security threads. This is the Plate A, top of sheet, example. At the upper right is an eagle over the obligation, a sunburst in background with arced FIFTY in the rays. Intricate MDF end panels have FIFTY DOLLARS in cartouches. The obligation is across and the engraved date is at top center, with 7% Interest bearing noted. Listed as Hessler X83E, this is a sharp-looking example. It is more difficult to determine a firm population for these due to their being Hole Cancelled. Our experience would place the amount known to collectors as fifteen to thirty examples in all grades. We have not auctioned an example since 2005.
