Another very rare Missouri series and two-city tie note from the \"Iron Belt.\" Notes from this earlier series may never have been signed or issued. The company did issue a later series engraved by the National Bank Note Company and known as modern proof impressions. The firm acquired the Iron Mountain land in St. Francois County in 1845. Led by James Harrison of Chouteau, Harrison, & Valle of St. Louis (notes were payable to Valle and Chouteau), they built furnaces from 1846 into the 1850s. Those furnaces produced pig iron initially hauled by wagons for forty miles to Ste. Genevieve. Travel was more efficiently served by the Iron Mountain, Pilot Knob, and Ste. Genevieve Plank Road, which opened in 1853, and later, the Iron Mountain Railroad from St. Louis to Pilot Knob, which was completed in 1858. The company operated until 1893. Finely engraved by W.L. Ormsby, New York and printed on bond paper. Under the curved title, the central vignette shows a locomotive and cars heading west while, incongruously, a small paddle wheeler sails east in the ocean above. The left end panel has a \"2\" counter in ornate lathe work; the right has an oval Taylor portrait with a \"2\" die above. These were designated to \"pay at sight to ____or Order TWO DOLLARS in Specie.\" This denomination was payable to \"Jules Valle Esq.\" Plate A. With just light handling, stylish, and a great rarity.
