A great note from a much in demand location, which offers a nice combination of type and signature rarity. The National Bank Note Census shows only four First Charter notes, all of which are $5 examples, extant from this bank; one is well circulated and three, all from the same sheet, listed as Uncirculated. This piece is the fourth note from that sheet, and, while quite nice, it is hardly \"Uncirculated.\" None of the three other notes from the sheet have been offered in living memory, and the sole remaining note (the low grade example) has been off the market since it last appeared in the Grinnell sale in March of 1946. The signature combination found on this note, that of Bruce and Wyman, is excessively rare, with the current edition of the Friedberg catalogue indicating that only four examples are known, a figure which now rises to five. For whatever reason, the Track & Price Census for this bank is wildly inaccurate, listing several First Charters which simply do not exist. But this piece is the genuine item, and the initial First Charter to be offered from this bank in at least a generation and possibly since 1946. The Apparent designation, \"Small Edge Tear at Top Center,\" is the sole detraction noted on the holder, and affects absolutely nothing.
