Proof. PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ.  This is another exceptional proof printed on India paper and mounted on its original cardstock. It boasts one of the Wellstood, Hay & Whiting imprint's great vignettes. The complete light orange tint has a micro-lettered pattern TWO across the note with deeper orange on the frame. Like the $1 proof, the left and right top corners have deeper tinted octagonal counters. At top center is the vignette, Finding the Red Ear, used on very few notes. This is the version engraved by WHW and later adapted by the American Bank Note Co. In frontier days, the chore of corn husking was enlivened by a game in which the finder got to kiss the young lady of his choice. Here, all three look expectantly at the candidate who seems either shy or unhappy. At lower left, Commerce holds a large \"2.\" We do not know of another $2 proof in private hands. In the Newman Part VI sale, the $5 proof from the series, PCGS Gem New 66PPQ, realized $9,888. Noted as \"Hole Punch Cancelled\" and \"Mounted on Cardstock\" as made.
