It included the Daigokuden (Great Hall of State) with the imperial throne on an axis with Sujakuōji; the Chōdōin (Ministries Compound) directly south of the Daigokuden, with 12 ministerial halls arranged symmetrically around a large courtyard for ritual ceremonies; and the Burakuin (Abundant Pleasures Chambers) to the west for banquets. All of these halls were built in the Chinese style, with cut-stone foundation platforms, brightly painted post-and-beam wooden structures and clay tile roofs. The original Daigokuden site has not been excavated. It was rebuilt after being burnt down in 876 and 1058 but not after the great fire of 1177. After the 9th century its place as council hall and seat of the imperial throne was taken by the Shishinden. The Dairi was located in a separate walled area north-east of the Daigokuden and contained the imperial residence and attendants' halls. The architecture of the Dairi was in the Shinden style and consisted of various wooden pavilions interconnected by corridors, forming small courtyards for gardens and informal gatherings. The Kyoto Gosho, built in the late 18th–early 19th century, re-creates some of the Dairi buildings at a site unconnected with the original Heiankyō imperial palace, which was abandoned after fires in the late 12th century.
