Face and Back Proof Pair. PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ & PCGS Very Choice New 64. The highest denomination from the Clark's multi-state tie proofs is dynamically designed and engraved. Like the $2 proofs, there was only one $5 denomination on each proof sheet, and these are also rarer than the $1 proofs from the 1990 ABN Sale lots. Only one face and back pair can be completed due to the unique back proof sheet that originated in lot 379 nearly thirty years ago. Each is an India paper proof mounted on original card by Danforth, Bald & Co., New-York & Philada. The layout is similar to that of the Quincy City Bank $5, but with the vignette at left showing less detail toward the outside, and the central area occupied by the clamshell showing the firm's locations. Urban and rural life are contrasted. Starting at upper left, with smokestacks in the background are a standing mechanic, sailor, embodiments of Education and Home Industry; evidently, some vignette elements were combined since the three knee areas (gray, white, and black) don't quite work with the two women's upper portions. Note that the curiously crude FIVE in the upper left corner is partly obscured by the mechanic's head and the tallest smokestack. At the right, a farmer, oxen, and dog stand near Ceres and a reclining allegorical female. Plate A face and color back. The face is noted as \"Hole Punch Cancelled\" and both are \"Mounted on Card Stock\" as made. A penciled archive book sheet number on the color back impression confirms the Schingoethe and ABN Sale pedigrees. A stunning pair of proofs that completes the three listed denominations in Haxby that were confirmed in 1990. An impressive five-state title proof that will interest all Obsolete note collectors who appreciate high quality and substantive banking importance.
