A new to the census note, which is one of the great treasures of Eric P. Newman's National Bank note holdings. Only two National Banks were chartered during the entire twenty years that comprised the first charter period, an illustrative example of the widespread poverty and devastation that characterized life in Arkansas immediately during and for many years after the conclusion of the Civil War. This was one of the two institutions to receive a federal charter, with the other in Fort Smith. The entire First Charter census from this state has hitherto contained only four entries, a lone $1 from the National Bank of Western Arkansas of Fort Smith, a sole $20 Original Series specimen from the Merchants NB of Little Rock, and one example each of a $5 and $10 Series 1875 specimen from that institution as well. The Series 1875 $10 has not appeared at public sale since the first Hickman-Oakes auction in April of 1976, but the $1, the $5 and the $20 have all appeared at auction during the past decade. The $1 last sold as part of the Q. David Bowers collection of $1 notes in 2010 where, despite its appalling grade of Good 6 with multiple restorations, it realized $37,375. The 1875 $5 also was last sold in 2010, with that piece, which graded Apparent Fine 12, also with multiple restorations, fetching an identical $37,375. Finally, the $20 Original, by far the finest of the trio, was sold at our 2007 FUN sale, with that piece, grading a problem-free Fine, realizing $80,500 against a pre-sale estimate of $50,000-$70,000. The Newman example displays \"Edge Damage at Left; Edge Tear at Bottom Left of Center.\" The tiny edge split at the bottom margin is truly trivial. The small pieces missing in the left margin do not extend into the design. Any estimate on a note of this rarity is always a surmise.  Ex: Eric P.
