The present urban fabric reflects very clearly the street-plan of the Greek and medieval city, for example in the Islamic character of the north-east quarter and the medieval layout of some streets. Alterations made by the Spanish overlords were superimposed on this fabric between 1500 and 1700. The intense building activity of the Spanish between the 14th and the 16th century survives in some important buildings, including the Palazzo Mergolese-Montalto (the finest example of 14th-century architecture in the city, unfortunately in very poor condition).
