Born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Married Mary Drinker on May 17, 1793. They had four sons and three daughters. Operated a shipping business between Philadelphia and Liverpool.
President of the Board of Trade of the city of Philadelphia. Authored the 1852 statement of this organization regarding formation of a Mint in New York.
