Approximately 10,000 German POWs were held at the Algona, IA camp. Prisoners worked in farms and factories and were paid 80 cents a day in camp scrip, redeemable at the camp canteen. The camp was dismantled in 1946. Today, an airport and National Guard Armory occupy the former camp site.
