St. Louis, MO - Bank of the State of Missouri, Bank in St. Louis $1 April 1, 1862 MO-60 G26 SENC. PCGS Fine 15. A beautifully designed and choice Civil War-dated $1 note from the home bank in St. Louis. Since the notes from this series were not registered with the state, they did not display a state banking commissioner's signature. Virtually all notes from this final series were redeemed by the bank or successor National Banks in Missouri and are extremely rare. Signed by Robert A. Barnes as president. Barnes moved from Kentucky to St. Louis in 1830, starting a grocery and commission firm on his own shortly after. By 1861 he was a millionaire and one of the wealthiest men in the state; his fortune established Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Barnes, a slaveholder sympathetic to the Southern cause and secession, was a very influential Missouri financier during the Civil War. Just prior to Ft. Sumter, he met with Governor Jackson and banking commissioner Sterling Price to move bank funds into pro-secessionist government hands. However, his wealth and stature allowed him to remain head of the bank in Union-held St. Louis during the war. There were no genuine notes from this late issue in the 1981 Vacca collection auction. The notes from the series are finely styled by the American Bank Note Co. New York. Allegorical Science reclines at top center under the full imprint. Surrounded by books, globe, telescope and octant, she uses a divider for measurement upon a scroll or map. Denomination dies are in the upper corners, and the border consists of denomination circles alternating with a floral motif. The title is straight across the center, with the denomination arcing below. The state seal, at bottom center, has the motto, \"Salus Populi Suprema Lex Esto,\" which translates to, \"The welfare of the people shall be the supreme law.\" Plate A. No. 1492. With a well-penned set of signatures of cashier A. S. Robinson and bank president Robert A. Barnes. Most issued notes observed in the Newman Collection are dated July 1, 1861; this is dated April 1, 1862, with the \"2\" overwritten on the engraved \"1.\" A very solid note with clean surfaces. This is an exceptional example from the historic Missouri bank, chartered twice, whose genuine notes were \"good as gold.\" Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society \n\n
