Kirtland, OH - Kirtland Safety Society Anti-Bank-ing Co. $1 Jan. 4, 1837 OH-245 G2, Wolka 1422-01, Rust 12, Nyholm 8. PCGS Very Fine 25. The Kirtland notes, originally issued in Ohio with some eventually countersigned and reissued in Salt Lake City, have been sought after for generations. Currency collectors desire them for their beauty and history. Mormon autographs of Joseph Smith, Jr., and Brigham Young have made them a favorite for manuscript specialists and unique in the Obsolete currency field. The Kirtland Safety Society Anti-Bank-ing Co. notes were the first issued Kirtland notes, yet the Mormon currency books list these notes second (this is the convention used in the recent Nyholm book as well as in specialized auction catalogs with Mormon notes, such as Clifford, Ford and Schingoethe). The failure to secure the bank charter with printed notes in hand and ready to issue forced some creative thinking by the Kirtland-based Mormon community. Their idea was to insert small type to create this \"title\" making it a \"company\" and not a bank. All these notes are dated January 4, 1837. Eventually, several of these notes were carried across the plains to Salt Lake City to be reissued in 1849. The host $1 note, prior to the stamping, was engraved and printed from the lower, denomination plate ($1-$1-$2-$3) by Underwood, Bald, Spencer & Hufty, N. York & Philad. A charming sheep-shearing vignette is at top center, under a long, arced title. Flanking are two cameo dies with \"1\" numerals. Identical ends have an early train in an oval at the center, and the four corners display\"1\" numerals. The Anti-Bank-ing notes have several signature variants. This example is signed by Frederick G. Williams as \"Sec P T\" and Joseph Smith, Jr. as \"Treas.\" Most Smith signatures were penned by scribes. Note that \"Cash\" and \"Pres\" are covered by block stamping in order to stay outside the banking regulations. Douglas Nyholm considered approximately 25 examples known when he published his book Mormon Currency 1837-1937 (2010, Author). This is a rare type and a choice example. The note has clean surfaces and is trimmed tightly or slightly inward in a few places. We have handled few \"Anti-Bank-Ing\" notes and all Newman Collection Kirtland notes have been eagerly bid upon.
