Cape Girardeau County, (M.T.) - Unknown Issuer \"I promise to pay, at my house in the County of Cape Girardeau\" Uncut Sheet of 25 Cents- 25 Cents 1817. Remainder. PCGS Very Fine 30. Likely unique, this two-subject sheet of private scrip from an unknown issuer \"in the county of Cape Girardeau\" is the first seen by us. The origin of the sheet is a mystery, and no signed notes of the series are known. Cape Girardeau County is one of the five Territory of Missouri counties from 1812-1821. Prior to that, it was one of the five original districts of the Territory of Louisiana; the name changed when Louisiana was admitted as a state in 1812. Unsigned, the issuer refers to their location in the obligation as \"at my house,\" which could have indicated several types of businesses. Printed on buff paper with full, wide selvage all around the vertically aligned pair of notes. Each 25 cent position has fancy bordering at the ends, straight double-line on the bottom, and wavy along the top. The obligation across states: \"I promise to pay 25 cents, at / my house, in the county of Cape / Girardeau, in cash or current / bank notes.\" There is space for a signature at the bottom. At the right end, inside the bordering, is a perpendicular 25 CENTS. There are only some minor handling folds, otherwise bright and pleasing. Though the exact origin of this early 1817-dated sheet is a mystery, its immense rarity is evident. It is also a significant territorial period uncut sheet. Ex: Eric P.
