Its name is derived from the ancient Greek for 'boar'. The island remained insignificant until the emperor Augustus visited it in 29 BCE and fell in love with it; he and his successor, Tiberius, who withdrew from public life to live there permanently between CE 27 and 31, constructed a number of villas there—12 if Tacitus is to be believed—of which there are substantial surviving remains of three. Least well preserved, but the favored residence of Augustus, is the 'Palazzo a Mare' in the middle of the north coast, spread out on a series of terraces over a strip c. 800 m long and 200 m wide. The main residential block lies to the east with a bath suite immediately behind it; there is also an adjacent artificial harbor for ease of access. Grove Dictionary of Art. There are a few small, dark pockmarks in the middle ground of the print and a blank margin along the bottom with a black caption."},{"label":"Subject (Time Period)","value":["Nineteenth century [LCSH]"]},{"label":"Physical Dimensions of Original","value":"20.6 x 25.3 cm"},{"label":"Image View Type","value":"Landscape; photographs"},{"label":"Collecting Area","value":["Kranzberg Art & Architecture Library"]},{"label":"Collection Name","value":["19th Century Architectural Photography Collection"]},{"label":"Subject (Geographic)","value":["Capri (Italy) [LCNAF]"]},{"label":"Description","value":"There are a few small, dark pockmarks in the middle ground of the print and a blank margin along the bottom with a black caption."},{"label":"Subject (Topical)","value":["Landscapes [LCSH]"]},{"label":"Genre Form","value":["Photographs [LCGFT]"]},{"label":"Type","value":["Still image"]},{"label":"Legacy Identifier","value":"1149"},{"label":"Medium","value":["black and white photography","albumen paper"]},{"label":"Inscription","value":"lower left, in black: 1149 CAPRI; lower right, in black: G.
