Another highlight from the Newman Collection and a territorial-period prize. This is a superb proof sheet, and has two types unknown to Haxby. It is the first time these types have been cataloged, and Obsolete currency specialists are now presented with an opportunity to bid upon a beautiful rarity showing both. Printed on card stock by P. Maverick, Durand & Co. The card stock is similar to the previously cited $1 proof sold in the 52 Collection Part I auction. The top position post note has a loosely clad bare-chested woman floating on the clouds; her facial details are exceptionally well sculpted, like a Hellenistic portrait. She holds a banner with \"$\" and space for an amount to be written. The Gothic title arcs above. Intricate end panels show POST NOTE at left and MISSOURI at right. Obligations are across along with engraved lines for post note text. The $5 position underneath has a running stag bisecting the titles, with the obligations underneath. End panels show FIVE left and MISSOURI at right in cartouches. There is no plate letter at the top of the post note; the $5 is plate A. Wide margins are all around. Vignettes on both notes are superbly rendered. A glorious piece and one the most impressively styled proofs from this period. The only example known to us and a key opportunity to obtain a museum-caliber item with the Newman Collection-pedigree. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society \n\n
