(Upper Louisiana) - \"On Demand I \"Nicholas Brezau\" promise to Pay Gen'l William Clark agent for the Missouri fur Company ... \" $171.22-1/2 St. Louis July 13, 1809. Fine to Very Fine. An important note related to the Lewis and Clark Expedition. This promissory note was issued to Brigadier General William Clark (famed explorer and later territorial governor of Missouri) as agent for the Missouri Fur Company. Hand accomplished in English on a larger sheet than the Bons and Hortiz promissory notes. The transaction is witnessed by Bon-issuer Sam'l Solomon as well as Pierre Chouteau. The illustrious William Clark was also a founder of the St. Louis Fur Trading Company (which included Manuel Lisa, Jean Pierre Chouteau and Auguste Pierre Chouteau). Nicholas Brazeau was illiterate and only placed his \"x\" mark on this document. The 2009 book Meriwether Lewis by Danisi and Jackson states that Brazeau was one of a small group of deserters from the two-year expedition. Interestingly, Clark had to sue Brazeau in November 1809 for nonpayment of this very note. (http://repository.wustl.edu/concern/texts/c247ds958). Laid paper, 20.5 cm by 17.0 cm. The back is docketed Nicolas Brazeau [piaster sign?; this was noted by Eric as \"peculiar and unusual but shows the two diagonals\"] 171 - 22 ?. Attractive and broad-sized. There are some splits on the hard folds, but much paper body remains on this bright note. Penciled calculations are at lower left on the face. Fine for the type. Unique and historic.
