The name of this type of structure—. Gongen zukuri—derives from Ieyasu's kami name, Tōshō Daigongen. In front of and parallel to the honden, which has irimoya zukuri (hip-and-gable roof construction), is the haiden, which also has a hip-and-gable roof. The ishinoma connects these two buildings. All the structures are wooden. The honden (façade 13.8 m, sides 10.6 m, height 12.9 m) is much larger than the average honden (façade 4 m, sides 4 m). The haiden has a façade of 22.3 m and sides of 8.5 m and the ishinoma a façade of 9.5 m and sides of 8.1 m. Both the façade and sides of the honden have six round columns. The interior has wooden floors covered with tatami (straw mats), and is divided into three rooms. In the innermost room there is a kyūden (a small shrine in the shape of a shrine building) where the deity resides. The interior space is divided in such a way as to express the solemnity of the deity and to separate worshipper strictly from deity. On the exterior of the honden is a mawari'en (wooden verandah). The main shrine is the most splendidly decorated of all Japanese shrine buildings and represents an especially early use on shrine honden of the Karayō style ('Chinese style', characterized by its sumptuous details).
