In the time of Pope Zachary (741-752) the site was Christianized and given over to Christian monks. In the middle of the thirteenth century during the Papacy of Nicholas III, two Dominican brothers, Sisto and Ristoro (responsible for Santa Maria Novella in Florence), took on the project. The church was designed in a gothic style with groin vaults covering the central nave. In 1453 the facade was completely redone at the prompt of Cardinal Francesco Orsini, and on the interior numerous family chapels were added. The church went through many renovations over centuries. The facade now is of the severe style and tripartite with a central, large door topped with a triangular pediment. To either side is a smaller door topped by a lunette with a circular window above. The interior has three naves separated by pilasters, and along the walls of the two minor naves are the tombs of illustrius Romans, including artists like Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The chapels and altars are covered with frescoes. The focus of the central nave is a statue of Christ by Michelangelo.
