The $1 denomination from an exceptional series of well-crafted proofs engraved and printed from the plates by Toppan, Carpenter & Co. on India paper mounted on original card stock. This is a Superb Gem. The Newman Collection proofs from this bank appear to be the only examples in private hands. In the vignette at the top, a weary shepherd reclines near his flock. Allegorical females are at the ends. Seated Commerce, at left, appears to hold up the \"1\" die above. At right, America as Minerva holds a shield and supports the flagpole with the furling Stars and Stripes flag. This is from the first series of notes with the bank's capital shown as $35,000 at the top, later to be raised to $60,000 (WI-50 G6a). The $3 Proof from this important series, PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ, realized $3,525 at the Newman Part VI sale. Noted as \"Hole Punch Cancelled\" as made. This layout and condition are stunning.
