William comments on the \"thorough canvassing\" that occurred between Mr. Huntington and William over James. He describes a sculpture by Mr. Mead of Lincoln that is in-progress of being completed, venerating it as a beautiful piece of American Art. There is another sculpture by Mr. Ball that depicts Lincoln and an enslaved man together, which William would love to buy and send to St. Louis. [This later becomes the Emancipation Memorial (Freedmen's Memorial) by Thomas Ball and Archer Alexander's photo is used for the face of the enslaved man.] While he likes the structures and galleries of Florence itself, he believes that the people are lacking in faith, respect, and courage.
