St. Louis, MO - Bank of the State of Missouri $50 Contemporary Counterfeit Jan. 1, 1847 MO-60 C6a. PCGS Very Fine 30. The first of two different contemporary counterfeits copying the genuine plate originally designed by Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. Phila. & NY. The crafty counterfeiters sometimes varied the imprint in order to escape detection (note that the genuine $50 example previous has the slightly later Toppan, Carpenter & Co. imprint). At top center, an allegorical figure with attributes of Moneta, Commerce, and America sits at the shore flanked by \"50\" dies. The left end shows Daniel Boone, clothed in frontier garb, standing above a denomination block. At the far right is Thomas Hart Benton dressed formally as a statesman and holding a scroll in place. On this false note, the left side of the wicker-covered jug is straight, not curved. The man second from the far left of Benton is taller than the one to his left, and his shoes are ill defined. The Boone vignette is very strong, and this was one of the most deceptive counterfeits in the period. Plate A. No. W 580. With the false signatures of Shields and Campbell.
