Continental Currency February 17, 1776 $1/2 Fr. CC-21. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. The third highest denomination from the Fugio series, with the sundial and two mottoes at the right side. This stunning note is from the third row of the lower serial number pane. A significant offering of a superior condition rarity: the highest graded Fugio $1/2 and tied for the top of the PCGS population report with the other Newman Collection Gem New 66PPQ note offered here. There are only eight Uncirculated notes of this type from over 130 graded at PCGS, and this historic offering includes four of those eight, including the highest PCGS-graded notes. This example is as made with deep inking and superior margins on the face. The face-to-back registration is nearly perfect. The paper, of course, is impeccable, and vibrant blue fiber is seen at the bottom of the back edge. Plate B. No. 386967. Signed by B. Brannan in red. We have never offered a PCGS-graded note of this type that approaches this level of perfection. We sold a PMG Gem Uncirculated 66EPQ for $9,400 at our September 2015 Long Beach auction. However, this Newman Collection note is much bolder and exhibits extraordinary originality. We consider this the finest we have seen, and a realization past five figures would not surprise us.
