This community is located about fifty miles south of Kansas City, and is the seat of Bates County. This was the first of Butler's three issuing banks and the only one of the trio that is truly collectible, as the next bank chartered has left but one surviving example and the third is as yet unreported. Like many communities in western Missouri, the Civil War proved a trial, both for combatants and non-combatants alike. After a pro-Union raid in 1861 by Kansas cavalry burned the courthouse and nearly all of the surrounding buildings on the town square, there followed a nearly six-month occupation by an Iowa cavalry regiment from April through August of 1862. With Bates County and surrounding areas filled with Confederate sympathizers, Union General Thomas Ewing issued his controversial Order Number 11, which called for the forced evacuation of the rural residents of Bates and three other border counties (Cass, Jackson, and Vernon) within 15 days of issuance. All rural residents of the affected counties, regardless of their allegiance, were forced to leave their farms and homes. Those who could prove their loyalty to the Union were allowed to remain in the counties but required to move to communities near Union military outposts. Those unwilling or unable to prove loyalty were ordered to move from the counties altogether or face imprisonment. The affected counties were swiftly depopulated, and by war's end, the town, and indeed much of the county had been burned, looted or otherwise destroyed. Somewhat surprisingly, this piece is one of nine survivors, and is likely equal to the nicest, which has been off the market since we sold it as part of the Denny collection twenty-five years ago.
