The main hall (hondo) of Kiyomizudera, rebuilt in 1633, measures 33.46×32.18 m. As well as being extravagantly large, it is consciously dramatic in design. Representing the apogee of the kake zukuri ('hanging construction') method of construction, the hondō stage and side wings, secured on enormous posts and a network of tie-beams, overhang a steep hillside, and the whole structure is covered by a massive roof.
