Cardinal Bernadino Spada was an ardent art enthusiast and a protege of Pope Urban VIII, and he set about building up a collection of paintings soon after he acquired the palace in 1631. The cardinal's brother Virgilio Spada was an Oratorian who was more interested in architecture, and he employed Borromini to build the celebrated illusionistic arcade in the palace garden. The pictures are crowded on the walls of the gallery's four rooms in 17th-century style and the entire collection gives a vivid impression of the taste of a wealthy avant-garde collector of the Roman Baroque period. In addition to portraits and history paintings by leading Italian painters such as Reni, Guercino, and Testa, the collection also includes works by the Italian Caravaggisti, and there is also a good deal of the genre work that was so popular at the time, including several paintings by van Laer and Cerquozzi.
