Scholars do not agree as to when the church was founded or the timing of the various stages of its development. The building is a Greek-cross octagon with short, open aisles that reflect Western architectural traditions. The dome has collapsed, but its first rings and two squinches survive; the eight-sided outer portico was added to the church in the Romanesque period. In plan S Fosca most closely resembles the 11th-century church of Panagia Lykodemou in Athens and Christianou Cathedral east of Filiatra in the Peloponnese (Greece). Elements of its interior decoration, such as the two tiers of niches and the frieze of pendant triangles and saw-tooth bands, are similar to those found in two Constantinopolitan churches, now Kilise Mosque (11th century) and Gül Mosque (12th century) respectively.
