An excessively rare early note from the county seat of Putnam County, one of the most avidly collected areas in the country and home to this cataloguer for several years in the 1970s. The census shows only one extant First Charter from this bank, with that piece, an Original $5, never having appeared at public sale. This piece is a most serendipitous discovery. It is the only First Charter $20 reported from Putnam County, and one of only a handful reported from all banks in the mid-Hudson Valley combined. Organized in 1865, this locally owned institution has been run by the Ryder family for 150 years, with this note signed by the bank's founding patriarch A(mbrose) Ryder. Unfortunately, the last several years have not been kind to this bank, which greatly expanded its lending during the real estate boom of the 1990s only to wind up under Federal inderdict in 2007 with the FDIC declaring the institution to be a \"troubled bank\" and mandating the hiring of a new officer to supervise lending. The PCGS Fine 15 Apparent with \"Small Edge Splits and Tears\" is a most conservative grade considering the brightness and eye appeal of the note.    Ex: Eric P.
