Kasuga was a family shrine for the worship of the ancestral and tutelary deities of the Fujiwara clan, who held high offices at the imperial court for a long period between the end of the 7th century and 1867. Kasuga Shrine prospered particularly between the 9th century and the 11th, when the Fujiwara held real power. When power shifted to the military élite, the shrine was worshipped at by the common people. The kami (deities) of the Kasuga Shrine include one goddess and three gods. One of the gods, Takemikazuchi no mikoto, is the deity of Kashima Shrine (Ibaraki Prefect.), and another, Futsunushi no mikoto, is the deity of Katori Shrine (Chiba Prefect.). The remaining god and goddess are Amenokoyane no mikoto and Himegami of Hiraoka Shrine (Osaka Prefect.). The first two gods are well known as deities of war. Gradually the kami were moved from these three shrines, until in 768 all four were formally established at Kasuga, where a honden ('main sanctuary') was constructed for each.
