It was founded in a volatile volcanic region c. 520 BCE as the Greek settlement of Dikearchia, a dependency of Cumae. Puteoli was conquered by Samnites in 421 BCE and fell within the orbit of Rome in the following century, becoming a maritime colony in 194 BCE and having full Roman colonial status under Augustus. In the upper town is an amphitheatre (130×95 m) of the mid-1st century BCE, replaced (or supplemented) by a larger one (149×116 m) near by, which was constructed by the Puteolans at their own expense during the reign of Vespasian (CE 69–79) but not finished until the early 2nd century CE. With a seating capacity of c. 50,000, this was the third largest amphitheatre in Italy, after those of Capua and Rome. The building is mainly of interest for its well-preserved subterranean passages (for illustration see Amphitheatre) and 80 animal cages, which were winched up to the arena through rectangular trap-doors. The complexity and size of the arrangements give a vivid idea of the sheer quantity of beasts that could be displayed (and despatched) at a single show.
