It has been suggested that this was the palace of Akbar's two chief queens, mainly due to its proximity to the royal residence. It lacks, however, both bathing facilities and a private inner courtyard. The site of the building at the edge of the royal complex overlooking the lake suggests a special use. An inscription in devanagari script reads: '[Vikrama] year 1629 [AD 1572] royal mansion of initiation'. This may suggest the structure was built for some of Akbar's religious discussions and initiation into his new order, the Din-i Ilahi.
