The temple contained a sacred fige, the Palladium, believed to have been brought by Aeneas from Troy, and other sacred objects and implements. There was no image of the goddess. The temple was presumably burned in the sack of Rome by the Gauls in 390 BCE, but the sacred objects had been moved to safety. It burned in 241 BCE, in 210 BCE it was saved from a fire in the forum, in 48 BCE it was threatened, it burned in the fire of 64 CE but was immediately restored by Nero. After the fire of Commodus destroyed it again in 191, Julia Domna, the wife of Septimius Severus, restored it. In its final rebuilding, the temple was of white marble, raised on a base of three steps, above which rose the podium. The peripteros was of twenty fluted columns with Corinthian capitals. To these an engaged order along the cella wall responded. Richardson, L., Jr. \"A New Topographical Dictionary of Ancient Rome.\" Baltimore: The Johns Hopkins Press, 1992, p. 412-413.
