Built between 1220 and c. 1270, it replaced a complex of episcopal buildings located in the castrum of the old city. The names of the architects are known from the labyrinth (destr. 18th century; reconstructed 1894–7) that in 1288 was set into the floor of the nave: Robert de luzarches, Thomas de Cormont and Regnault de Cormont. The date of 1220 for the beginning of construction was given in the labyrinth. Bishop Evrard de Fouilloy is specified as the founder in his obituary notice, and a charter of Arnoul from 1242 states that the former cathedral was burnt during Evrard's episcopate. A fire is recorded in 1258; the restorer, Viollet-le-Duc, noticed traces of it on the vaults of the radiating chapels, so it is thought that the lower parts of the chevet were already built by then. The Chronicle de Corbie mentions the completion of the cathedral in 1264, the same year as the meeting between Louis IX of France and Henry III of England in Amiens. The axial clerestory window in the apse carries the date 1269 and the name Bernard d'Abbeville: the main fabric of the Cathedral, built from west to east, was thus completed by this time. The nave chapels were added from 1292, the best-known being that of Jean de La Grange, built c. 1375 at the same time as the Beau Pilier intended to reinforce the north tower. The upper storeys of the towers were being built in 1366. Pierre Tarissel, master mason from 1482 to 1510, added extra flying buttresses to the straight bays of the choir, repaired the piers and inserted tie-rods in the triforium to stabilize the crossing vault. The crossing spire was rebuilt after its destruction by lightning in 1528. The French Revolution (1789–95) left the cathedral virtually unscathed, and restoration was undertaken from 1820.
